Victorian Bench Company, handmade in England

About our benches

We make beautiful historic reproduction period garden benches for both professional and amateur garden owners.

We have fourteen benches made in aluminium. Our benches are made in a traditional forge near Skipton, North Yorkshire by a fourth generation forge-master who also assembles and hand finishes each period bench in our workshop. The end result is a quite rare, beautiful, handmade and entirely British product at a very keen price.

Our garden seats are produced by casting from moulds created from original Victorian iron garden benches. Most of our range was originally created at the Coalbrookdale foundry near Ironbridge in Shropshire around 150 years ago. Others are from Yorkshire or are nineteenth century French designs.

Each period bench in our range has its own page with a selection of photographs and some background notes. It will also tell you the colours that the bench is available in. All benches can be ordered in White, Stone White (a slightly creamy white), Metallic Bronze, Black, Dark Green or Lichen. We can also supply benches fitted with ground anchors if security is an issue at a small extra charge.

Coalbrookdale designs are generally distinguished by their wonderfully naturalistic designs which incorporate flowers and plants reflected by wonderful names such as ’Fern and Blackberry’ ’Horse Chestnut’ ‘Lily of the Valley’ and ‘Passion Flower’. Bench making foundries throughout Europe and the US did not hesitate to copy each others work which sometimes makes it difficult to attribute an original bench although original Coalbrookdale benches are typically distinguished from their imitators by high quality casting and superior aesthetics.

These Victorian garden benches were originally made in iron but we use aluminium which (although substantially more expensive than iron) lends itself to good detail, will not rust and is a third of the weight, making our garden bench much easier to move. Instead of painting we finish the bench by ‘powder coating’, a process which provides the colour finish in a very hard weather resistant seal. We also use hardwood where slats are fitted and stainless steel bolts to ensure that your Victorian garden bench will retain its beauty in challenging conditions for a very long time to come.
